Hi. I've not used the arduino, but I'm actively programming using the
avr-libc toolchain and avr-gcc in linux.
AVaRICE works nicely, as does avrdude.
The arduino is basically a ATMega168 with a FTDI USB to TTL serial chip,
and a rather pretty board. The real fun comes when you get one of the
many shields.
