That is because of a very simple reason - have you tried chisling curves?
When all you can do to write is to chisel letters, it is very difficult
to do curves. Straight is trivial. That is why you see very few curvy
letters other than a C and O (looking like < and <> respectively) and all
Us are Vs.

And on a unrelated, tangential, inconsequential, no big deal note, have
you every wondered why some of the ancient languages are written right
to left (like Jawi, Arabic, Hebrew etc)? It has to do with the scribe
having to chisel the text but being right handed, he (it's always a he
rarely ever a she) holds the hammer with his right hand and chisel with
his left. And as he carves out his masterpiece, the easiest way to read
what he was doing is, if ,the text went from right to left - if it was the
otherway around, his chisel would be blocking the letter. Now, if there
were more southpaws, the story would have been different.

Harish "not a southpaw" Pillay - and a happy new year to all!
